My First Newborn Photography Session of 2015

Ahhh, how I love newborn photography! The round cheeks, tiny lashes, long, slim fingers and toes, pouty little lips…. And the smell! Is there anything better than newborn baby smell?! For a mom whose youngest child is about to turn 4, I especially miss all of those newborn features! Needless to say, I was pretty excited when I found out the first session of 2015 at my Kansas City studio would be a newborn session!

I was over-the-moon excited when my friend revealed her pregnancy this summer! I assumed we’d be setting up a family session last fall, and was floored when she asked if we could hold off on that and instead kick off 2015 with a newborn session! I may have squealed with joy when I read that message!

*swoon* Isn’t she beautiful?! She came to see me at 15 days old, thanks to a delay with some heavy jaundice, but she slept like a dream for most of the session.

Her big sister is clearly so in love with her baby sister! I lost track of the number of times I heard her ask her mom if it was her turn to hold the baby again. Watching her cuddle, kiss, and love on her was special, and I just kept clicking that shutter. I took far more sibling pictures than normal, but when there’s that much sibling magic happening right in front of you, you just go with it!

We got some sweet mother/daughters images too, and again – pure magic! They just interacted together, and I witnessed it and froze time for them!

We had a couple of special items to try to incorporate into her photos, which was fun! Above she’s snuggling with her brand new lovey, and below I utilized a small quilt that was made for her to compliment her woodland animals themed nursery. I loved how both turned out!

She did stare me down for a bit at the end of her session, and I was quite alright with that! While my goal is always to get the baby to sleep so we can get those peaceful, curled up poses, I also love when a newborn makes the direct eye contact.

I cannot think of a better way to kick off a new year, than by photographing this sweet girl! What an honor and privilege!

If you’re starting the new year with a new baby in your home, I’d love to chat with you about the special I’m running on my Kansas City newborn photography sessions and Watch Me Grow first year packages! You can read some of the details by clicking through here.
